The First 28 Days Matter: Why Proper Pool Startup Procedures Are Essential

For community pools undergoing renovation, resurfacing, or new construction, the startup process is one of the most important phases in protecting the long-term appearance and performance of the pool finish.

According to National Plasterers Council (NPC), a pool finish begins hydrating immediately after installation, with the majority of that hydration occurring during the first 28 days. During this critical period, the surface is especially vulnerable to staining, scaling, discoloration, and other issues that can affect both aesthetics and longevity.

Why Proper Startup Procedures Matter

A successful startup involves more than simply filling the pool and turning on the equipment. It requires:

✔ Continuous monitoring of water chemistry

✔ Timely adjustments to pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels

✔ Regular brushing of the pool surface

✔ Careful management of local water conditions

✔ Ongoing oversight by trained pool professionals

Improper startup procedures can result in permanent finish damage, leading to costly repairs and homeowner concerns down the road.
